London Rivers Week 2024: Walk along the Mutton Brook – Pollution Issues and Hanna Checker Demo

Join us for a morning walk along the Mutton Brook where we’ll discuss some of the pollution issues negatively impacting the brook and ways citizen scientists (trained volunteers) can help monitor and understand these issues to lead to improved water quality. The walk will be about 1km in total but there will be several stops along the way.
One way citizen scientists can monitor sewage pollution is with small devices called Hanna Checkers, so we will also demonstrate how to use these! Plus we may also have the chance to see CURB deploy one of their water quality devices in the river.

Things to note on the day:
– Meet promptly at 10am at the confluence between the Mutton Brook and Dollis Brook (where these two rivers meet). The what3words for the meeting point is ///that.shirt.ocean.
– We will walk along an asphalt footpath next to the river, but please still wear sturdy shoes in case we come off the footpath onto the grass at times.
– Dress appropriately for the weather, so bring suncream, hats, sunglasses if it is sunny or a raincoat if it looks like it might rain.
– Bring a water bottle with you.
– Water quality monitoring equipment will be provided for use on the day and you won’t be going into the river so you don’t need to bring waders or wellies.
– There aren’t any easily accessible toilet facilities so please go before you arrive. The nearest ones are likely in the Esso garage (872 Finchley Rd, London NW11 6AH).
